About Us

Laker Youth Basketball

Laker Youth Basketball is a competitive, community-based basketball program for boys and girls in grades 4th-8th living in the area served by Lake Oswego High School (LOHS).  In the 2019-20 season, the program consisted of 21 teams and approximately 220 players.  Laker Youth Basketball is part of the Lake Oswego Youth Traveling Basketball Association (LOYTBA).

The purpose of Laker Youth Basketball is twofold:

  • To provide a fun, challenging youth basketball experience to the Lake Oswego community
  • To serve as a feeder program for the LOHS boys and girls basketball programs

What Does "Competitive" Mean in Laker Youth Basketball?

  • No guarantee to be selected for a team (see LYB Policies tab)
  • Score and standings are kept
  • Play by Oregon high school rules (some exceptions for grades 4-5)
  • "Real" basketball rules are enforced (traveling, fouls, etc.)
  • Higher standards for behavior and performance than rec programs
  • Winning is not essential but competing is
  • Attendance is expected at all practices and games; players are expected to consider Laker Youth Basketball their primary winter sports activity

LOYTBA is a non-profit corporation formed in 1996 to provide a competitive basketball program for boys and girls in grades 5-8 feeding into Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools.  4th graders were added to the program in 2013.

LOYTBA is run by volunteers.  It has a 5-person Board of Directors which includes 2 members from the north side of Lake Oswego (President and Treasurer), 2 members from the south side (Commissioner and Secretary), and 1 member (Tournament Director) alternating between the north and south side each season.  Funds raised by LOYTBA are used to enhance the basketball experience of all LOYTBA players and on occasion support Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High School basketball programs.

LOYTBA formed the Three Rivers Basketball League (TRL) to provide competitive opportunities for LOYTBA players.  Today, over 200 teams representing more than 20 youth programs participate in the TRL.  LOYTBA is still responsible for operating the TRL.

TRL youth basketball teams are organized by high school area.  Players participate in the area in which they reside, as each youth program is considered an extension of the high school program.

Laker Youth Board

The Laker Youth Board (LYB) is a committee formed by LOYTBA to conduct the operations of Laker Youth Basketball (the Pacer Youth Board performs the same function for Lakeridge).  The LYB consists of volunteers who manage all facets of the Lake Oswego program, including signups, marketing, scheduling, coaches, equipment, volunteers and uniforms.  The current members of the LYB are listed above.
